A president cannot remain in office a single day after completion of the five-year term, stressed JVP MP Vijitha Herath.

The Supreme Court has ruled that even a president elected for a six-year term can function for a maximum five years, he noted.

So, Ranil Wickremesinghe cannot be the president after 17 November, Herath said at a media briefing yesterday (12).

The presidential polls should take place as per the constitution, he said, adding that it is the only way to defeat the anti-populist rule.
