The health service is in crisis due to a severe shortage of specialist doctors, said the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA).
Its spokesman Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe lamented the absence of a clear-cut programme to prevent their brain-drain.
He noted that it takes more than seven years to train a doctor to be a specialist.
Meanwhile, deputy director general of health services Dr. G. Wijesuriya has told Neth News that more doctors would be enrolled this year for specialist training as a remedial measure.
Also, it would be made mandatory for a specialist doctor to serve the country a minimum of five years following training.
