Dr. Athula Pathinayake has been refused an extension as principal of the Sri Lanka Law College by the Legal Education Council (LEC) despite the progress achieved by the institution under him in the past three years.

The legal fraternity of Colombo is taking up the matter, which comes after anonymous accusations and insults against him proved to be false.

Dr. Pathinayake has been commended for modernizing the institutional mechanism, developing physical resources and opening up international educational opportunities for students of the Law College.

The six LEC representatives of justice minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, who is also the prime minister, have failed to notify her of the decision against extending his term.

According to sources in the government, not even the ministry secretary has been a party to the decision.

Dr. Pathinayake accepted the Law College position by cutting short his employment at Deakin University in Australia, where he had been in service for more than 20 years.
