Restructuring has become a much talked-about topic once again. There is talk on restructuring our debt.

Also, a dialogue is on about restructuring state institutions. Some say it is the same privatization programme put forward in 2000 that comes under a different name. Simply put, it is the sale of state properties and national resources. It was what Ranil introduced in 2000 under Regaining Sri Lanka.

Ranil now makes it clear the government should do no businesses. That task is up to the business community to perform. What the government should do is to maintain law and order.

Anyway, Ranil has started a dialogue on whether the government’s only part should be monitoring businesses. An opposing view too, is gaining momentum. The opposition accuses Ranil of having always sold everything for survival. And that, he will not leave anything behind this time, not even the country, for someone else to rebuild. Trade unions are taking to the streets to stop Ranil from selling everything for survival.

There could be big scenes with the formation of more and more movements to protect the motherland and national resources. Which of the two opinions should we accept?

Should the government’s opinion be accepted because Ranil is the president?

Should the opposition’s opinion be accepted because Anura, Sajith or someone else says so?

Or else, should the opinion of the TUs be accepted?

Should we accept everything said by politicians who wake up from their sleep from time to time?
