With India being chosen to host the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Cup, Sri Lanka has been excluded from the tournament as a result of a ban by FIFA.

The 14th edition of the SAFF Cup will be held from June 30 to July 03, with Sri Lanka previously bidding to host the tournament.

The announcement that India was awarded the rights came yesterday (16).

Nepal too, expressed interest in hosting the SAFF Cup, but India was awarded the tournament due to the better facilities it has in place.

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) was sanctioned last month by the world football governing body, which alleged ‘third-party interference’ in the administration of the game.

The tournament is likely to feature six nations only – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan, although the latter’s participation too, is in doubt over diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
