Sri Lanka’s new batting sensation Kamindu Mendis became the fastest Asian to five Test centuries on Friday as he scored a hundred on Day 2 of the second Test against New Zealand.

Mendis broke the record of Pakistan’s Fawad Alam who had scored five Test centuries in in 22 innings.

The 25-year-old from Sri Lanka has scored his fifth Test hundred in just 13 innings.

Mendis is now joint-fourth fastest in the all-time list of fastest batters to five Test centuries.

The Sri Lankan batter is also the joint-fourth fastest in the history of cricket to get to five Test hundreds.

With his latest Test century, Mendis levelled Australian batting great Don Bradman and West Indies legend, George Headley.

On Day 1 of the ongoing Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand which is being played at the Galle International Stadium, Mendis had created a world record for the most successive fifty-plus scores since debut.

He has eight fifty-plus scores since making his debut against Australia in 2022.
