Domestic debt restructuring under the IMF programme is having serious consequences to the middle class in a manner similar to the Easter Sunday attacks,

said secretary of the Centre for Labour Struggles.

He was addressing the Centre’s first conference in Maharagama yesterday(08).

The bitter truth in the Easter Sunday attacks was that a certain segment of society knew about the planned bombings, and instead of attending mass on that day, took measures for their personal protection.

Similarly, a certain segment of society knows about the attack on the pension funds of the working people, but remains unawares.

It is the the class responsibility of the Centre for Labour Struggles to rally the workers to defeat this latest attack.

Referring to their recent meeting with the Central Bank, Nagamuwa said CBSL governor Nandalal Weerasinghe was one of those who knows about it.

Weerasinghe justified a 30 pc tax on the EPF with a lame argument that it is reasonable, since banks are levied a 50 pc tax and buyers at the primary market have to pay 30 pc, he added.
