The presidential election is unlikely to take place on time, while government politicians insist on holding the local government polls before the implementation of the 13th amendment to the constitution, said MP Prof. G.L. Peiris.
Speaking to the media today (14), the FPC executive committee member claimed the president’s most recent speech in parliament indicated a plan to put off holding elections.
He said the people were in abject poverty as there were several governments within the present administration.
As head of the cabinet, the president should promote collective responsibility of ministers, which was not happening, said Peiris.
He added that a tug-of-war between ministers had ruined the country’s agriculture, while a collapse of the health service has caused a fear-psychosis among the people.
If the president’s so-called green economy by 2048 is to be realized, present public issues should first be addressed, he said.
Poverty had doubled, while the government blatantly violates supremacy of the law and curtails rights of workers, he charged further, adding the opposition would work to defeat all these attempts by the government.
