A remembrance has taken place for nearly 40 Tamils murdered in the east 31 years ago.
The Army soldiers accused over the killings have subsequently been cleared by courts.
Relatives gathered at Muttumari Amman Kovil at Kiran in Batticaloa on 09 August and offered flowers and lamps to the memory of the dead.

Children and pregnant women were among the 39 butchered to death, while 34 others escaped in the attack at Mailanthane village in August 1992.
At a related hearing in Batticaloa district court, 24 soldiers attached to Poonani Army camp were identified by witnesses at an identification parade.
Citing the safety of the accused, the case was first transferred to Polonnaruwa, and then to Colombo.
After witnesses were threatened and intimidated, the case was heard in the presence of an all-Sinhalese jury, which subsequently found the accused not guilty.
Last year, relatives of the victims appealed to the president to order a fresh hearing of the case, but they are yet to be given any response.
