A discussion on the devolving police powers under the 13th amendment to the constitution
was held on 09 August between public security minister Tiran Alles and a delegation of TNA MPs.
TNA members explained the necessity of decentralization of powers by taking the example of other countries and noted the successful models of power distribution in developed nations such as England and India.
In response, minister Alles underscored the contrasting political and social contexts between England and Sri Lanka.
TNA MPs also said drug-abuse and crime have increased throughout the northern region and many young children have become heavily addicted to drugs.
Minister Alles said the matter would be referred to a police committee that deals with drugs and underworld activities.The meeting concluded with agreement to meet again in a fortnight.
