A presidential election will be held by June next year, said the UNP’s Colombo district leader Ravi Karunanayake.
He was addressing a party meeting in Modera on 29 July.
According to him, an extensive alliance, including the UNP, will be formed to contest the presidential election.
The party will field an independent candidate, said Karunanayake.
Former SJB strongman P. Harrison and ministers Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara also addressed the meeting.
2024 is a year of elections – Ruwan
Meanwhile, UNP deputy leader Ruwan Wijewardena said 2024 would see a presidential, general as well as a provincial council election.
Speaking to the media following a party meeting in Dompe, he said many from the SJB and the SLPP have reached agreement to join hands for the victory of president Wickremesinghe.
He stressed the need for a mechanism to control commodity prices that remain high despite a decrease in inflation.
The matter has received the president’s attention as well, he added.
Opposition leader calls for immediate election
Meanwhile, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has demanded the government halted all its acts of cowardice and held an immediate election.
The country needs a clear change, he said.
The SJB is prepared to face an election any time, he said in Anuradhapura yesterday (30).
