Chief opposition whip Lakshman Kiriella said he has asked the International Monetary Fund’s resident representative to grant an extended period for the government to repay the loan.

Addressing parliament, he said the opposition would support the government in issues of the public.

Kiriella said he asked the IMF resident representative, in the presence of state finance minister Shehan Semasinghe, to give more time to the government to pay back the loan in order to help ease pressure on the people.

However, the IMF official insisted that it should be repaid speedily, said the chief opposition whip.
