The court of appeal yesterday (24) issued a stay order preventing the naming of senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon as per attorney general’s written instructions to the CID as a case suspect.

It relates to the attack on the ‘GotaGoGama’ protest site and the recovery of more than Rs. 17 million in cash from President’s House in July last year.

The CA issued two further interim orders preventing further action on that letter and arresting Tennakoon.

A panel comprising judges Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and A. Marikkar granted leave to proceed with a petition filed by the senior DIG.

It issued notice on the respondent attorney general, IGP and the director and the OIC of the CID to testify before the court on May 10.

Tennakoon’s lawyer Romesh de Silva said it is the police, not the AG, that has the authority to name a suspect.
