The SLPP wants the justice minister to give an assurance that the proposed anti-terrorism act is not against the constitution, fundamental human rights and democracy if it is to support the bill’s passage in parliament.

The party’s general secretary Sagara Kariyawasam also needs a clear definition of the term ‘terrorism’ in the bill.

He asks that the draft be not tabled in the House until these requirements are met.

Meanwhile, justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe calls for proposals for amending the proposed act, saying that mere criticism will not do.

It will be presented to parliament on April 25 or 26, he said on April 21 in Kandy, where he briefed the chief prelates of the Malwatte chapter on the matter.

He spoke in defence of the bill, but the prelates said it would be best to consider views of both sides.
