The CID is probing a political vlogger, Darshana Handungoda, over claims he has made in a YouTube channel with regard to the X-Press Pearl maritime disaster.

Additional solicitor general Vikum D. Abrew and state counsel Naomi Kahawita have sought the investigation, alleging that Handungoda has made defamatory remarks against them.

The vlogger has mentioned both by name and criticized them over a decision to file a case in a court in Singapore, not Sri Lanka, to seek compensation for the maritime disaster.

Meanwhile, justice minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe has refuted allegations of a delay in filing the court case.

The minister has claimed that he has mediated after observing slowness in the process.

An evaluation report by a 40-member expert team expected by September 23, 2022 was received only in mid-January this year.

That report has been referred to the AG’s department for action, he said.
