The parliamentary sectoral oversight committee on environment is discussing a civil case to obtain a 6.2 billion US dollar compensation in lieu of the X-press Pearl maritime disaster.

It will seek views of the stakeholders to decide if the case should be filed in Sri Lanka or in Singapore.

A committee meeting chaired by Ajith Mannapperuma on March 23 decided the case should be filed within 58 days.

An expert committee evaluated the harm caused to the marine environment, after which a committee of lawyers decided the compensation case should be filed in Sri Lanka.

However, it has now transpired that with cabinet approval, the attorney general is working to take the matter to a Singapore court.

The sectoral oversight committee will meet again to take a final decision as well as to resolve legal hurdles to enable the expert committee to inspect the shipwreck, which it had been unable to do so far.
