With incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne set to retire on March 25, the decision regarding the appointment of a new IGP or whether the incumbent will be granted an extension is likely be announced today.

However, government sources say that the President has decided to give a 6-month service extension to the current IGP Wickrameratne.

Opposition MP and member of the Constitutional Council (CC) Kabir Hashim has told 'Anidda' newspaper that there will be no discussion pertaining to the appointment of a new IGP at the CC meeting scheduled to meet today (24).

If a new IGP is not appointed, the incumbent should be given an extension of service.

MP Kabir Hashim also observed that the issue of a service extension of the IGP is not matter related to the Constitutional Council.

According to opposition sources, an extension for the incumbent is very much likely on the cards.
