Two govt. ministers encountered strong public opposition as they visited Wariyapola to open a Rs. 250 million cultural centre yesterday (11).

The facility at Walpola, Bamunukotuwa was planned to be opened by minister Vidura Wickramanayake and state minister D.B. Herath, but people charged it had been ‘opened’ on several occasions previously.

Anti-riot police were called for the ceremony to continue, with a group of artistes opening it as Wickramanayake arrived late.

People also said the money spent on such useless ceremonies could be utilized to renovate the dilapidated Mahakeliya-Katupotha road that gives access to the cultural centre.
