A writ petition filed by a retired Army Colonel, W.M.R. Wijesundara, against the holding of the local government polls will be taken up for hearing at the Supreme Court today (23).

The application seeks an order for a postponement of the election on the ground that holding it at a time when the economy was in crisis would bring nothing positive for the people.

It was first heard on February 10.

Wijesundara later filed a motion seeking the petition to be taken up expeditiously.

On February 20, his lawyers informed the SC that it needed not be taken up since the postal voting for the election has been postponed indefinitely.

In the meantime, the Election Commission filed a motion before the SC over difficulties in holding the LG polls on March 09 due to a lack of funding.

Commissioner general of elections Saman Sri Rathnayake said their next course of action would be announced following today’s court hearing.
