MP Prof. G.L. Peiris has urged president Ranil Wickremesinghe to dissolve parliament, claiming the present government has no people’s mandate whatsoever.

From midnight yesterday (20), the president has powers to dissolve parliament, which Peiris strongly believed should be exercised.

Now, neither the constitution nor the law, but a single person, who is the minister of finance, decides whether or not to hold elections, he told the media.

Ninety percent of the population has rejected the present regime, said the MP, and added that holding elections as per the finance minister’s wish is ruining democracy.

Peiris strongly disapproved of attempts to replace the existing election commission with a new one, and said the finance secretary would be taken before courts for his conduct over holding elections.
