Police fired water cannons and teargas to disperse protesting university students and arrested six of them near Kelaniya University yesterday (19).

Agitators demanded the release of two of their colleagues taken into custody on a previous occasion.

Among those arrested yesterday were four Buddhist monks.

President of the university’s students union Kelum Mudannayake and activist Dilshan Harshana are in remand custody over an alleged incident of ragging.

Rejecting the allegation, their lawyer informed the Mahara magistrate’s court at a hearing on February 13 that the dispute was over political differences.

He submitted a supporting document given by the university’s administration.

The magistrate permitted the CID to record statements from the two students at remand prison.
