SJB MP Eran Wickramaratne has proposed establishing a separate and unified revenue administration agency as a timely need.

His proposal came in a speech he delivered at the recent unveiling of an enhanced blueprint by the party for economic recovery.

Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, MPs Dr. Harsha de Silva, Kabir Hashim and Harshana Rajakaruna also participated.

MP Wickremaratne also said that the departments of excise, customs and inland revenue collect more than 75 per cent of the tax income of the state.

“I do not believe that any one of you will accuse (the late) Mr. Mangala Samaraweera or me of having swindled a single rupee or dollar when we had the finance ministry under us. But, the level of corruption in those departments did not diminish.”

“Therefore, we cannot trust individuals. A system change is needed. Therefore, we are proposing a unified revenue administration agency,” he added.
