Twenty officials from the United States led by a top diplomat met president Ranil Wickremesinghe this afternoon (15) and left the country immediately thereafter.

They arrived at Katunayake airport last evening (14) in two US Air Force Boeing C-17A Globemaster-III planes from Greece, Neth News reported.

From there, they were taken in 12 vehicles with a police escort to Colombo, during which no other vehicles were permitted on the Colombo-Katunayake expressway.

They had spent the night at Colombo City Hotel.

Security in and around the airport had been strengthened for three days in view of their arrival.

Around 8.45 this morning, the US team went to their embassy in Colombo and from there proceeded to the State Intelligence Service office for a meeting.

Their brief stay in the island ended with the meeting with the president at his residence at Paget Road.
