Commissioner General of Election Saman Sri Ratnayake has filed an affidavit to the Supreme Court seeking orders to facilitate holding the local government polls.

It says the Election Commission has faced great difficulty in taking steps to hold the election due to the failure of the Treasury secretary and other officials to release the funds required.

The commissioner general of election urged the court to make appropriate orders in accordance with the law and with its undertakings to the court.

He maintained the CPC and the CEB have a duty to ensure the provision of fuel and electricity for the purpose of the election.

A budgetary allocation of Rs. 10,000 million has been made for 2023 for the election and approved by parliament, Ratnayake added in the affidavit.
