It has now come to light how the Attorney General had allegedly twisted the arm of the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) and officers of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to arrest former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and IGP on compulsory leave Pujith Jayasundera in an illegal manner.
It is reliably learnt by The Leader that the Attorney General had threatened to get the Acting IGP and CID officers arrested if they did not carry out his directives and arrest Fernando and Jayasundera in relation to the Easter Sunday attacks.
However, when the CID officers were finally forced to listen to him, the Attorney General’s Department has leaked the letters sent to the Acting IGP by the Attorney General to the media.
As a result, Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne rapped the Attorney General and the CID before granting bail to Fernando and Jayasundera claiming there was no evidence or grounds to charge them with murder.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General is also accused of covering up for State Intelligence Services (SIS) Director Nilantha Jayawardena, who has been exposed by Fernando and Jayasundera in Parliament before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the Easter Sunday attacks, as having failed to share the intelligence about the attacks which only he possessed.
