The attorney general is to file a case in a Singaporean court in connection with the X-Press Pearl marine disaster, said the Marine Environment Pollution Prevention Authority (MEPA).
MEPA chairperson Darshani Lahandapura said she has been informed by the AG’s Department that the process could begin by mid-February.
According to her, a compensation estimated at USD 6.5 billion would be sought over the grave pollution caused to Sri Lanka’s environment from the ship’s fire.
MEPA had recommended to the cabinet that a compensation case be filed in a local court, but at a recent meeting with ministers, president Ranil Wickremesinghe decided to take the matter to a court in Singapore.
