A further increase in electricity charges will send the local garments industry to total collapse, a free trade zone union warns.

The Cabinet has approved an increase in January and June to offset the CEB’s losses.

Major garment producers have decided to relocate their factories from Sri Lanka due to very high production costs, convener of the FTZ employees’ centre Gamini Ratnayake told the media.

As a result, garment workers are in danger of losing their jobs, he said.
