The budget for 2023 makes no concessions to estate workers, whose plight is worsening by the day, alleged the movement for the protection of upcountry people.

“Estate workers who have been working hard for decades to earn foreign exchange for the country and their families are left with hunger. The budget for 2023 had nothing to offer for them,” said consultant to the movement Fr. Marimuttu Sathivel in a statement.

No government has taken steps to improve their lives, as 2023 marks 200 years since their arrival on the island, he said.

The president’s disregard for them in the budget makes his regime’s policy on them very clear, he said, adding the parties that rode to power on their back too, have failed them.

Fr. Sathivel urged the president to ensure them justice without deceiving them any further.
