A protest by Buddhist temples against an unprecedented increase in electricity charges has been backed by the catholic church.

With Vap full moon poya falling today (09), temples will switch off their lights between 6 pm and 10 pm.

In a show of support, the Colombo archdiocese has been instructed by Rt. Rev. Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith to follow suit, said Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini.

Fr. Gamini told the media yesterday it would be a token protest against uncalled for tariff increases for religious places as well as average consumers.

Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission says tariffs would be reduced by half, at a new rate of Rs. 32 per unit, for religious places from August 10.
