SLPP MP Professor Ranjith Bandara has been appointed as the Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE).

He was elected to the post with 15 members of the committee voting for him while 7 others voted for SJB lawmaker MP Eran Wickremeratne.

The opposition has requested speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to conduct the vote for a chairman of the Committee of Public Enterprise (COPE) via online.

Chief opposition whip Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday (05) that he was making the request as some MPs are currently overseas.

The opposition has asked that SJB MP Iran Wickremaratne be appointed to the position.

Meanwhile, social media posts allege that what the government wants is to give the COPE chairmanship to someone who will cover up its frauds.

SLFP general secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara commented about the appointment of members to COPE and COPA.

Meanwhile, SJB’s Kabir Hashim was unanimously elected chairman of COPA at its first meeting.
