More than 200 estate workers in Thalawakele have been forced to live in a community hall without any facilities for three years after their houses were gutted in a fire caused by an electricity leakage.

A total of 202 members of 24 families from Holy Rood Estate are taking the temporary shelter since May 29, 2019.

The foundation was laid in 2021 for a housing project for them, but it remains suspended.

These workers are requesting the government to provide them suitable accommodation with basic facilities.
