An appeals committee has been appointed by the Sports Ministry to entertain appeals over dissatisfaction due to actions or decisions by a local sport governing body.

Yesterday's appointment of the seven-member committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Chandra Jayatilake was made as per clause 30 of the Sports Act no. 25 of 1973.

It also comprises president’s counsel R.K. Don Buddipriya Shanaka Ranasinghe, Dr. Maiya Gunasekara and lawyers Gayal Kalatuwawa, Sudantha Bandara, Mahesh Kotuwella and Gayani Prematilake.

According to sports ministry sources, the appointment of this appeals committee is aimed at either removing the incumbent presidents of Sri Lanka Cricket and Football Sri Lanka and replacing them with cronies of the government or dissolving both SLC and FSL and appointing interim committees.

Further to this, FSL president Jaswar Umar has been summoned for an inquiry this afternoon (29) by the secretary of the ministry’s appeal advisory committee, lawyer Shalani Roshana Fernando.

Speaking to the media two days ago, Umar charged that predecessor Anura de Silva and finance committee chief Ranjith Rodrigo had taken the matter out of the football field and created a big black blemish on the local sport.

Umar said he had information with regard to financial fraud of more than Rs. 50 million that had taken place during de Silva’s tenure.

He accused that the two are in the habit of slinging mud at their opponent whenever a football election nears.
