The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has requested President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to provide a National Identity Card (NIC) number to every child at birth.

In a letter to the President, GMOA General Secretary, Dr. Senal Fernando said that the organisation believes that will help to strengthen children's rights and well being.

He further said that there had been a discussion recently at the technical committee on vaccinating children and the administrative issues that arise because children did not have NIC numbers.

The GMOA also noted that they had submitted a proposal to the "Expert Committee appointed to draft a new Constitution" on December 30, 2020, pointing out that in order to ensure the rights of the child, every child should be issued a NIC number at birth and that the identity card containing that number should be given to them at the age of 16 or earlier.
