One human skull was unearthed on the first day of excavations at a gravesite at the Colombo port as the second stage of the work resumed yesterday (26).

Skeletal remains belonging to at least two persons and four skulls appeared when excavations were suspended on 13 September.

Skeletal parts dug out during the first stage are being kept at the office of the JMO of Colombo.

JMO Sunil Hewage and archaeologist Prof. Raj Somadeva are heading the excavations at the grave site found on 13 July during excavations for the construction of the expressway leading to the port.

Excavations started on 05 September following a court order.
